Joseph Russell Knowland papers, 1889-1961.

Consists of over 50 years of correspondence, reports, articles, and printed materials concerning the development of Calif. during the first half of the twentieth century, chiefly documents from the various organizations to which Knowland belonged, with some personal material. Includes material pertaining to waterfront and Naval Base development in Oakland; Oakland Tribune records; California State Park Commission correspondence, park development plans, committee reports, and minutes; and records of the California Centennial Celebration of 1948, from planning stages through final reports (1941-1950). Also includes a rough draft of Knowland's autobiography, newspaper clippings related to Calif. history, and photographs of state parks and Centennial Commission Committee members.
